How do we live in the new world/new mind while also raising kids?
I think about this often. I see friends traveling the globe, expanding their minds and consciousness. Having a beautiful life….well, at least it looks beautiful according to Instagram. Either way, living the life that I’m sure each of us deep down is super jealous of. Ah, to be in my 20’s in this era. Where traveling to Bali to practice yoga isn’t so out of reach in these times.
I recall my 20’s were fueled with alcohol, sleeping, working a whole lot and making a lot of bad decisions. They certainly were not about being healthy, expanding awareness and having amazing experiences globally. I’m grateful that I did all of the silly things I did at the time I did them. But now I have to say that I’m left with a bit of a “how now” feeling.
By “how now”, I truly mean, how the hell am I supposed to keep aligned with my own awareness? To meditate, be calm, practice mindfulness, be elevated, travel….(my god this list can go on) with a family and a job and responsibilities?! We have a mortgage. My husband has gone back to school and works full-time. The boys have school. I have my own business. I mean, it’s not like I can just take off for a month and relax in Bali, right? (note, I will use Bali often as I’m hoping the more I write it down, the more likelihood of traveling there :) )
Well, I think my “how now” answer just looks a little different. And that’s ok! I mean, I love my super awesome family and I want to make sure that they can be a part of this amazing shift as well. This shift is not just for mortgage-free singles!
Before I go off on a rant about this entire topic (don’t worry, full series is coming!), I thought I would break down a few activities and thoughts to share with fellow families out there trying to relate to and figure out how to fit in with all of these IG accounts of amazingness (without jealousy!)
1 - family meditation Every day (well, almost every day) at 3:35pm we all meditate. We burn sage, sometimes sweetgrass. Sometimes we even use our crystal sound bowls. But we always hold a crystal or stone and sit together for all of 4 minutes. The crystals keep the boys occupied and quiet and they love having the job of gathering the cushions and choosing the stones! (note: yes, you can still meditate for 4 minutes and it still counts. I’ve had some of the most outrageous meditations in less than 3!)
2 - read! Instead of turning the TV on at 6, wait until 630 (just as an example)! Give yourself at least a 30 minute window to just stop, reflect and read. It will inspire and encourage growth for you AND your whole family!
3 - plan a trip. Yes, I know, you’re broke. Preach. But seriously, you can do this. Take a Sunday morning and figure out with your fam (or hey, maybe just the two of you!) where you’d like to go. Look at what you’d like to do there. Now put that number down and figure out how each of you can contribute to making it happen. Maybe the kids have to help out a bit more for some coin added into the travel pot every week! I’m telling you, you can do this. You just need to make it a priority. And trust me, you need a break!
4- create a routine. Boring, right? Well, I thought so too. But it’s actually really great! If you want to go to a yoga or meditation class but keep forgetting or getting too busy, make it a priority. Put it into a weekly schedule or routine and figure out the best time for it. Even go as far as to create a weekly menu so you can have everything you need for the week - less time going to grocery stores = more YOU time!
Plan plan plan. When you want to be free-spirited while having the time of your life, the most family-friendly, responsible way to do it is to plan! You will actually be super surprised at how much time you can find in your day that you thought didn’t exist!
Life gets messy, but if we make the time for cleaning it up and organizing, what happens can be truly amazing and life-altering! Save money. Learn to relax. Do things for your soul. Travel.
You can have it all - you just have to know what it is you want and set those sights! So now we can stop being jealous of the free-spirited Instainfluencers and take our lives to the level we want!
